The Aging and Their Sleeping Patterns

Written By: Barrie Home Inspector - Mar• 02•12

A recent survey of more than 150,000 randomly selected adults suggests that apart from a dip in when one hits 40s, the quality of sleep, like wine gets better with age. Apparently it’s the 80 year olds who sleep like babies.  One of the researchers said that while ailments and stress do play a part, the notion that older people are light sleepers is completely wrong. Now universities are equipped to measure sleep duration and disturbance but it hardly matches the volunteer’s own opinion of their sleep patterns.

A recently released study in the journal Sleep reports of poor sleep were associated with health problems and depression, and women said they had more sleep disturbances and were more tired than men. The quality of sleep improved throughout the life span, although there was a small increase in sleep difficulties during middle age.

There are some indications that older people are enjoying less sleeping time in the slow-wave sleep mode, which is usually associated with "Good Sleep".  While seniors may getting the same amount of sleep, they possibly are not enjoying it as much if missing the deep sleep cycle.

As people get older, they tend to lower their standards of what it means to be healthy. So it could be that these seniors simply have a rosier opinion of their sleep patterns than other, more objective measures suggest. For example, in 2004 a large meta-analysis of people aged 5 to 102 years found that overall sleep time drops with age , by about 10 minutes per decade. So when you see grandma taking a nap, let her sleep. She might wake up feeling refreshed-or, at least, content.

Health conditions can interfere with sleep. As we age, we are more likely to develop a chronic illness. These illnesses result in changes in our body that interfere with normal sleep. By managing your health condition well, you can minimize this effect. Examples of how some illnesses interfere with sleep are: Arthritis can cause pain, which makes it difficult to fall asleep.
Diabetes or an enlarged prostate may cause you to use the bathroom frequently during the night, which interrupts deep sleep.

As we age, it is more likely that we are taking one or more medications. These medications can often interfere with sleep. Your doctor may be able to change your medication to one that doesn’t cause you to lose sleep, or possibly change the time of day you take that medication. Some common medications that are known to interfere with sleep include: some high blood pressure medications, antidepressants, steroids, some decongestants and bronchodilators.

As we get older we all gradually reduce our activities.  Resuming an exercise program and eating healthy foods may be all that is required to jump start our body to start enjoying better sleep and feeling more alive.  Always consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program or changing your diet.

C-30 and Government Invasion of Privacy

Written By: Barrie Home Inspector - Mar• 01•12

The Lawful Access Law is a new bill that Harper is trying to pass that would require all telecommunication and internet providers to install surveillance equipment that would monitor all their customers phone calls /text messages/emails(to whom and from who)/downloading /surfing/internet shopping purchases etc. and then the communications companies would in turn be legally required to turn over all and any of their customers records to the police who could demand at any time without any prior notice these records without restrictions or a warrant.

Privacy International, one of the world’s leading privacy organizations, last year released the results of a multi-year investigation into the shadowy world of the commercial surveillance industry. Dubbed "Big Brother Inc.," the investigation placed the spotlight on dozens of companies that specialize in covert surveillance technologies that are typically sold directly to governments and law enforcement agencies.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews certainly upped the rhetoric on this debate by connecting critics of the legislation to child pornographers , but Canadians are clearly against some of the basic tenets of the bill. The survey suggests Canadians believe cracking down on online crime is important – but they are not prepared to give up some of their freedoms to do it.  In fact after the uproar and eventual withdrawal of the bill, Vic Toews, stated that he hadn’t read it.

Our local newest MP, Kellie Leitch spoke to Metroland Media about the controversial bill, which if passed in its current form, would give law enforcement the ability to obtain names, addresses, IP addresses and e-mail accounts from Internet service providers. The bill is called the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act. Some in opposition believe the bill is a violation of Canadian’s online privacy and freedom.  She possibly even went to school with Vic Towes, or maybe they have the same instructions on what to say.  Vic never read the bill, you have to wonder if Leitch did either.  Why is it elected officials only do what the Prime Minister tells them to do, and they never listen to the people who elect them.

As usual with any Bill introduced there are hidden agendas and obtuse language to hide distasteful items.  One detail that hasn’t really seen the light (and it may not be an accident) is the hidden gag order. Not only will the police, national security folks and the competition cops be able to get customer names, addresses, IP addresses and e-mail addresses without a warrant, there’s a gag order that means you’ll likely never find out you’ve been the subject of such an inquiry even if you ask your ISP.

After a strong public backlash, the Tories had originally agreed to send Bill C-30 to a Parliamentary committee for review before Second Reading – a rare step that invited opposition input before the government itself had even signalled its support for the Bill. The government had even pre-emptively declared itself willing to consider  what the opposition had to say – and the Tories weren’t particularly good at that even when, as a minority, they needed opposition support much more than they do now. But they might be giving it even more review – Saturday’s Globe and Mail reports that  the Tories are taking their foot off the gas pedal. While sources in the government told the Globe that the Conservatives still plan to push ahead with C-30, the timing of their next move is unclear.

Commercial Building Inspector–Ontario

Written By: Barrie Home Inspector - Feb• 22•12

Commercial Property inspection requires special training and education.  A commercial property is defined as the building structures and improvements located on a parcel of commercial real estate.  These may include structures such as buildings with residential units operated for profit, mixed-use buildings, strip malls, motels, factories, storage facilities, restaurants and office buildings. Large Buildings is an intensive course dealing with the Occupancy of Buildings; Building Fire Safety; Safety within Floor Areas; Exits; Barrier Free Design; Structural Design; Change of Use and Renovations to name a few.  As you can see from the subject titles all of these aspects of a building are important and can be very expensive to repair or upgrade.

In August of 1999, the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) published a Standard E2018-99, which defined "good commercial and customary practice for conducting a baseline Property Condition Assessment (PCA)." This standard was specifically written for commercial real estate and largely intended for commercial real estate transactions. The Standard was updated in July of 2008 and renamed E2018-08.

Designated by OBOA as a Certified Building Code Official who will be performing your Commercial Building Inspection. All of our Property Condition Assessments or PCAs use the baseline property condition assessment process as outlined in the ASTM E-2018 Standards and InterNACHI International Standards of Practice for Inspecting Commercial Properties.  We use Thermal Imaging for Moisture, Overheat and Roof leak detection.  Reports are detailed and contain detailed pictures and summaries to accurately describe building and conditions found.

The commercial property market is more susceptible to downturns in the economy. The rental income derived is obviously dependant on the business that rents the property from the owner, so the company renting the property really needs to be in a successful arena in order for lease agreement to run as smoothly as possible.

The Commercial Building Inspector www.commercialbuildinginspector.ca also will arrange for Environmental Assessments. We work in partnership with JFM Environmental. A Phase I ESA is an assessment of a property conducted in accordance with the regulations to determine the likelihood that one or more contaminants have affected any land or water on, in or under the property.  The Phase I ESA provides preliminary information about environmental conditions on the property; a determination of the need for, and where necessary, a basis for carrying out any Phase II ESA.

We are the best choice for Commercial Building Inspections with all our staff being fully trained in the Ontario Building Code and having many years of practical experience with inspecting commercial and industrial buildings.  We have inspected commercial and industrial buildings valued over 30 million dollars.  Our inspections include plaza’s, malls, strip malls, industrial, office complex’s, residential apartment buildings and mixed use commercial buildings.

Insulation and Your Homes Energy Loss

Written By: Barrie Home Inspector - Feb• 20•12

Insulation used in building is generally use to prevent the transfer of sound, heat or cold. Typically  the majority of insulation in buildings is for thermal purposes, the term also applies to acoustic insulation, fire insulation, and impact insulation.  Some insulation are designed to perform more than one function.

Insulation in buildings will increase the comfort level for the occupants.  Insulation reduces heat loss or gain and is a factor in energy conservation in the building. such as: cellulose, glass wool, rock wool, polystyrene, urethane foam, vermiculite, perlite, wood fibre, plant fibre (canabis, flax, cotton, cork, etc.), plant straw, animal fibre (sheep’s wool), cement, and earth or soil, but it can also involve a range of designs and techniques to address the main modes of heat transfer – conduction, radiation and convection materials.

The requirements for insulation is regulated by building codes.  For example a home built in the 70′s in Barrie, ON would only require R-28 but any home built after 2006 will require R-40 insulation in their attic.  The basement walls are also required to be insulated down to with a couple of inches from the floor.  As energy becomes more expensive the Building Codes are requiring more energy conservation from builders and designers.

In cold conditions, the main aim is to reduce heat flow out of the building. The components of the building envelope – windows, doors, roofs, walls, and air infiltration barriers are all important sources of heat loss.  Thermal Imaging is one method of identifying all these areas of heat loss.  The Barrie Home Inspector  www.barrie-home-inspector.com performs a Free Thermal Imaging Scan with every home inspection.

Most houses built from the 1990s onwards were built with insulation in the walls to keep the heat in, but if your house is older than that it may not have any wall insulation at all. If this is the case then you’re paying good money to heat the outside air, instead of just heating your home.

Another major cause of heat loss and gain are drafts.  They are caused by gaps left at doors, windows, electrical fittings, hatches, wall penetrations and wall and ceiling joints.  A good caulking gun and spray foam are two great products for stopping most drafts which will make your home more comfortable and more energy efficient.
